Style - Representational

I am primarily a plein air artist. The attraction of plein air painting for me is being in the natural environment that I attempt to capture on canvas. I am better able to witness changing atmosphere, shadows, clouds, brightness, and the myriad effects of wind on the mountain and coastal sites I favor, than if I were only passing by. And while hiking and mountain biking are favorite activities, being in one place for a time while painting offers much more time to observe the beautiful, transitory details. The sensation of mountain air, the fragrance of plants and dirt, the movements of animals and insects, the immense sense of presence.

I have had the extraordinary pleasure of spending time painting with, and learning from, truly wonderful artists here in California, including Ken Auster, Karl Dempwolf, Randy Sexton, and Debra Huse, to name a few. I have exhibited in both group and solo venues, including the Santa Monica Mountains Anthony Beileson Interagency Visitor Center, La Galleria Gitana, Malibu City Hall, Santa Paula Art Museum, and Topanga Canyon Gallery.

I am honored to be currently serving as President of the Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains and Seashore, a group of local fine artists with a long history of painting representational art of the Santa Monica Mountains and beaches to promote appreciation of the environment and to support conservation and maintenance in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area and local parks.

Derek Schimming

Style - Abstract

Derek is an abstract expressionist and his art is influenced by his father’s works from the 60’s with mid-century modern vibe. Growing up with a father who was an architect/artist and art collector and a mother who owned an art gallery and helped cultivate new artists, Derek was exposed to a variety of arts and styles and from a young age showed a great appreciation and his own artistic style. Without formal training Derek expresses himself via strong emotions and life events, conveying from his mind’s eye to the canvas. Working primarily with oils and acrylics his non-traditional style produces unique and vivid works with multiple details and depth which draws in the viewer and allows them to discover different nuances.

Jayne Cooper

Style - Abstract

Artistic passion almost never follows a straight and narrow path. It evolves and becomes more expressive and powerful with each brush stroke. Such is the journey for Los Angeles artist, Jayne Cooper. Her path from child prodigy to becoming an internationally recognized figurative artist has followed the twists and turns of a rich creative life. Jayne’s natural talents were recognized at a very early age when she won awards for her striking colors and figures. As a young adult, she traveled extensively in Europe, where her artistic sensibilities were shaped by her exposure to Modigliani, Picasso, Rothko and Henry Moore—influences that clearly resonate in her current work. Moving back to Los Angeles, she became an in-demand cosmetologist for film and music celebrities, which also had a profound impact on the development of her signature figurative art. When she wasn’t shaping the images of her clients, she was making hundreds of drawings and paintings that translated her client work into the abstract visual vocabulary that shapes the work she is producing today. Jayne currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA, and has been featured in numerous galleries and exhibitions.

I have always been an artist at heart but took quite a few side tracks before I decided to be a full time painter. A B.A. in Fashion Design, a sportswear designer, freelance textile and surface designer, a costumer in the film industry, owner and creator of a hand painted children’s furniture company and partner in a “recycled” clothing design venture.

Then, at 50 years old, I studied with Signature Artists from the California Art Club and Los Angeles Art Academy.

Painting is a meditation, a passion, which directs me. My lifestyle is the backdrop and muse for my artwork. I live on a lake, at the base of the Santa Monica Mountains, near 40 acre ranches with every type of farm animal and minutes from the beach. I have a family of friends that inspire me by how they live their lives and are my cheerleaders for my endeavors. I live with a black doggie with a white spot and a white kittie with a black spot. I own an original Barbie doll (I never played with) yet today, she is dressed as Frida Kahlo. am a frustrated writer (though published) and a closeted wannabe comedian a la Lucille Ball. I see beauty in everything. I admire excellence. I can find humor in almost anything. I paint with those values in mind. “Learn to live and live to learn”. It is one of my favorite mottos. (Douglas Horton). I am so grateful that you stopped by and took the time to get to know me. I hope it gave you some insight as to what motivates me and keeps me painting on a daily basis.

As a Graphic Designer and a painter, she has been fortunate enough to work on projects with Malibu-based entities such as: The Malibu Playhouse, Once Upon A Time Children’s Theatre, The Montgomery Arts House for Music and Architecture, Eco Hero Kids, The Malibu String Academy and The Malibu Civic Ballet. Despite her busy schedule, she makes time for her first love, painting, and has enjoyed success creating land and seascapes depicting her vision of the Malibu experience. “Often in my paintings, I aim to illuminate the human connection with nature, especially a surfers’ call to the water. I want to capture the coastal creature in their element; playful, contemplative and immersed in the great beauty of the Pacific Ocean. I refer to these paintings as Ocean Portraits because they usually feature people I know or people that I have had the good fortune to meet thanks to a commission. The subject matter can be described as esoteric, but I think it can speak to that place of joy we all feel inside when we know, in that moment, we are grateful to be here.”

When I moved to the U.S. from Denmark, I was 5 years old. At first I was a very shy child and drawing was my outlet and joy. As I got older, this love never faded, I earned my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. I have been an artist/illustrator for 40 years. Over the years I have managed/worked several Fine Art galleries. I worked as a background artist in the animation industry, I then moved on to work in-house for a children’s book publisher illustrating books. In the last 15 years I have freelanced illustrating children’s books for Sleeping Bear Press.
